Save Your Money

Every month you are in Australia without employment carries a cost of about $4000 to $5000 in regular outgoing costs - even more if your family is split up and paying for another household in another country while you try to find work.

That is a sure way to put immense pressure on yourself when you have removed yourself from family and friends. You will consider taking the first job, ANY job, and may end up with additional job stresses with less pay as you try to settle in to a new way of life.

You may be mentally writing off these expenses and stresses as a “cost of getting there”. But what if you could still achieve the same result of finding work AND sponsorship in Australia for much less cost? Read on!

For migrants who already have a visa and are about to arrive in Australia, it is a good idea to get the job search process started early. We think you should aim for starting your interviews no more than two weeks after arrival, rather than waiting several more weeks until housing, schools and furniture are all sorted out. Setting up house first will push the interviews and eventual work start date out by several months. Guaranteed.

Once you arrive in Australia, you will generally have a fixed amount of money and will be faced with paying out more than you bring in. And what happens if there is an unexpected delay in being ready to start work, such as sickness, housing or school problems? This is why we recommend starting the job search before arriving in Australia.

Who knows, you might find out that you are unemployable in one line of work and need to rethink what you are looking for.

Start by comparing the Hire A Migrant service fee against the cost of Do-It-Yourself job search.

Any cost comparison will show that a migrant who starts work one month earlier than anticipated will have earned enough money in that month to easily cover the Hire A Migrant fee.

In deciding between Do-It-Yourself and using Hire A Migrant, consider that a fair and proper comparison against our fee would be to add weekly living costs to lost wages.  Our clients save a minimum of eight or ten thousand dollars where we have quickly found employers who wanted to hire and sponsor them.

This would show that Hire A Migrant fee can be recovered by starting work just two weeks earlier than expected.  But we suggest you use a more conservative measure - our statement of claim is that one month of ordinary work in a mid range occupation gives break-even on the Hire A Migrant fee.

Hire A Migrant can also reduce your emotional costs:

  • avoid the accumulated frustration of receiving so many “no thanks” without getting a clear reason why,
  • avoid doing endless rounds of recruitment agents only to be told you need to have a visa or your local knowledge is not strong enough (a euphemism for ”you’re different”), and
  • taking less time to find your next employer in a new country where your personal networks are not established yet,

If you do prefer Do-It-Yourself, we recommend that you use a direct approach method. This requires understanding that “Proper Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance”, as it minimises time being wasted on chasing dead ends, unhelpful recruitment agencies and difficult employers.

If three quarters of jobs are not advertised, then three quarters of your time should be spent looking for work outside of online job portals and recruitment agencies. Your time should be allocated to reflect the source of the vacancy.

But how and where should you start looking?

Start by thinking that finding a job with a sponsor is like a separate job in itself. It requires good research, thorough preparation, constant communication and record keeping, regular  reviewing of results, refining of “the pitch” - and then doing it all again.

Think. Prepare. Pitch. Review. Repeat. It’s tiring just to think about, and more so if you have to do it!

Once you find an employer who will talk to you, make sure you develop a way to highlight your strengths and minimise your weaknesses (such as “can’t start tomorrow”, “lack of local knowledge” and “they’re a bit different”).

Now it makes sense to consider obtaining some assistance in eliminating the leg work of employer research and the more tedious aspects of finding employment - dealing with all the negative replies and frustrations of receiving no reply. Your part would be to brief us, and then wait for the employer details to be presented to you.

This is what Hire A Migrant was set up to do - to remove the drudgery and difficulties in finding willing employers who would hire and sponsor a migrant.

We cut out the drudgery and frustration by working around the middle man and eliminating unhelpful employers. Here is a more pictorial way of showing you the benefit.

We believe that most weaknesses can be turned into strengths with a clever job search strategy, or can otherwise be dealt with by education, information sharing and personal contact.

Thinking cleverly is the Hire A Migrant competitive advantage.

And you can access it for much less cost than Do-It-Yourself.

The Australian Government is now in caretaker mode ahead of the national election scheduled for August 21. The timing is very unfortunate as a long series of major changes to immigration policy are still unfinished, leaving many thousands of people in a state of great uncertainty.

Although it is possible that State Governments may be able to submit their new lists of State Sponsored occupations for Ministerial approval, it is unclear whether the Minister still has the ability to authorise their implementation at least until a new Government is formed. Similarly, other unwelcome legislation for capping and ceasing certain visa categories is also unable to progress. Another choke point is that quotas for certain occupations may also be implemented at State and Federal levels soon after the election.

Or not! One major party view is that smaller employers should find it easier to become a sponsor, which would enable many more job applicants through. Applicants affected by change and uncertainty may still consider applying for 457 permits until their visa pathway for permanent residency is made clear. Even without the election, Immigration is in a bit of a mess and it will probably be October before it’s mostly cleared up.
