Pointers About The Points Test

This is a reference chart for use when assessing whether or not you might be able to get a visa. users of this chart should be aware that it is drawn from the DIAC web site, and is not necessarily kept up to date here. We always suggest that applicants who rely on points to meet the visa criteria get a professional assessment as to whether or not they can claim the points necessary. Many self completed applications are known to have failed through misunderstanding of points entitlements.

The table below lists all the current pass and pool marks for the points tested visas in the General Skilled Migration category.

Details of the points system and possible changes to it are here.

20 points can be awarded for an offer of relevant full-time employment in the MODL occupation, which is something we can help you with.

We suggest you consult with a professional migration agent if your points score is a problem. There are various options that may apply:

  • If you score 100 points you may be eligible for
    • Skilled - Sponsored visa subclass 176 or
    • Skilled - Regional Sponsored provisional visa subclass 475.

If you meet the pool mark for the Skilled - Independent visa subclass 175, you can still lodge and register for the Skill Matching Database. If you score below the pass mark, but above the 'pool mark', your application will be held 'in the pool' for up to two (2) years after assessment. The next part is getting out of the pool - this requires either state or employer sponsorship.

If the pass mark is lowered at any time in that two (2) year period, and your score is equal to or higher than the new pass mark, your application will be processed further. We wouldn't suggest waiting around for a points drop as the number of applications remains strong and points will arguably remain high. The best way out of the pool is to secure a job offer that earns you enough points to qualify for the visa outright.

You should always check the current pass mark immediately before making an application. You will be assessed against the pass and pool mark that is in effect on the day you make your application.

The Australian Government is now in caretaker mode ahead of the national election scheduled for August 21. The timing is very unfortunate as a long series of major changes to immigration policy are still unfinished, leaving many thousands of people in a state of great uncertainty.

Although it is possible that State Governments may be able to submit their new lists of State Sponsored occupations for Ministerial approval, it is unclear whether the Minister still has the ability to authorise their implementation at least until a new Government is formed. Similarly, other unwelcome legislation for capping and ceasing certain visa categories is also unable to progress. Another choke point is that quotas for certain occupations may also be implemented at State and Federal levels soon after the election.

Or not! One major party view is that smaller employers should find it easier to become a sponsor, which would enable many more job applicants through. Applicants affected by change and uncertainty may still consider applying for 457 permits until their visa pathway for permanent residency is made clear. Even without the election, Immigration is in a bit of a mess and it will probably be October before it’s mostly cleared up.
